D-Day & Normandy Video Collection

Other collections:  Civil War Holocaust The Great War

       Full list of contents

Each file contains short video clips (all .wmv files) which can easily be transferred into a video editing package (such as Windows Moviemaker which comes with all Windows XP and Windows Vista personal computers), to produce educational video documentaries and essays.

The main features of each location have been recorded including close ups and pans (moving the camera left to right etc), the aim being to produce a wide range of useable clips which could be edited together to tell a story.

Each location has been split into smaller sections so that the file, containing video clips, photographs and site information (maps, diagrams, leaflets etc), is more manageable and easier to use.

In addition a small Google Earth file is included for each location which pin-points the exact position of the subject matter, (at the time of writing the Google Earth view of Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II Birkenau is of very low resolution and no features are visible - May 2008).  In order for this to work the user must already have the free Google Earth application installed on their personal computer.

IMPT NOTE:  The video files are all .WMV format for use on Windows XP and Windows Vista computers.  The files have not been designed for use on MAC computers.

D-Day & Normandy

D-Day, 6th June 1944, was the Allies invasion of Hitler’s Fortress Europe. While today its success is well known and dominates World War II history, at the time the invasion was anything but a success.

The aim of this video collection has been to record the obvious locations (the five well known beach sectors from Sword to Utah) but also to show some of the less well known but critical locations such as La Fiere, Pegasus Bridge, Pointe du Hoc, Brecourt Manor and Graignes.

Individually, none of these actions made the landings a success but in its own way each was key.  Today, it is impossible to understand the sacrifice that the Allies made to make the landings a success.  If nothing else, it is hoped that by seeing these locations, students will better understand the significance of the events of June 1944.
